Citron Wine Bar & Bistro and Ten Prime Steak & Sushi
Honored by Wine Enthusiast Magazine

Wine Enthusiast Restaurant AwardsProvidence, RI – November 20, 2008Citron Wine Bar & Bistro and Ten Prime Steak & Sushi, two of Providence’s top restaurants, have each been honored with a 2008 Restaurant Award from Wine Enthusiast magazine.  Citron is the recipient of the Award of Unique Distinction, while Ten earned the Award of Distinction.

With its fifth annual Restaurant Awards, Wine Enthusiast recognized the most select group of restaurants in North America with three levels of awards; Award of Distinction, Award of Unique Distinction, and Award of Ultimate Distinction, based on the depth and quality of the establishment’s wine list and wine service.

Focusing on organic and bio-dynamic wines, Citron’s wine program offers more than 260 wine selections, including more than 50 wines and champagnes by the glass, an extensive offering that is preserved by Le Verre de Vin, the only system capable of effectively preserving an unlimited number of still and sparkling wines.

Ten’s wine list boasts more than 65 bottles, also preserved by Le Verre de Vin, and is updated daily and weekly.  The extensive collection of fine wines is divided into groupings by red and white.  Whites include the straight forward “Easy Blondes” like Teruzzi & Puthod Terre di Tufi, Pascal Jolivet Sancerre, and Antinori Campogrande Orvieto; crisp and clean “Svelte Blondes” including Jordan Chardonnay and Bouchard Pouilly Fuisse; “Wild Red Heads” like E&E Black Pepper Shiraz and Rosemount Estates Balmoral Syrah; and the Italian “Hot Blooded Red Heads” including Sassacaia Bolgheri and Banfi Brunello di Montalcino

“We are honored to receive these awards,” said John Elkhay, Maestro, Chow Fun Food Group.  “Our Corporate Beverage Director, Ted Newcomer, has made each of our wine lists his passion, updating them weekly, and even daily, to ensure our guests have the best dining experience possible.”

Pheonix: 10 Steak & Sushi: Red Snapper and redder meat
by Bill Rodriguez

The expression "as American as cherry pie" should be changed to "as American as surf & turf." Where else but in the land of excess and conspicuous consumption would a thick slab of beef not be enough?

Well, 10 Steak & Sushi — known to its friends as "10" — has taken on the schizo combination as its identity and signature. It opened about four years ago as Ten Prime Steak & Sushi — presumably the first name considered was something like Ten Prime Steak & Very, Very Fresh Sushi, and You’ll Like the Funny Drinks, Too.

An entertaining atmosphere seems to be way up on the place’s priorities, though as of a recent visit the waitstaff has not been outfitted as cowboys and mermaids. The restaurant was established by chef John Elkhay, along with Rick and Cheryl Bready, all proprietors of the informal yet culinarily elegant XO Café across town. They have since opened Big Fish, a sea-theme restaurant on Richmond Street. The corporate executive chef for all three these days is Nicholas A. Rabar... MORE
